Monster City Studios Builds Crazy Cartoon Tree Houses
Monster Urban center Studios (MCS) sounds like a movie production company. And for good reason. The five-year-sunset, California-based design and fabrication firm builds "themed environments" for amusement parks, movie sets, and interactive museums. They work out of a massive Fresno workshop and are contracted by such companies as Disney and Dreamworks. Only when they're non creating fantasy worlds for the next blockbuster, the 15-somebody team heads from backlot to backyard where they construct fantastical treehouses and playsets that seem torn from the pages of fairytales.
"My background is model railroad building," says James A. Powell, Frailty Chief Executive of Design for MCS. "I day I made something kind of cartoony, and soul said you want to make over this into a dog house. Indeed I did, and they pet it. And then people same you need to wee a playhouse. And at length, it fair-minded got bigger and large."
As in, "$70,000 treehouses" big. A quick scan of Monster's Etsy page shows five models for sales event, from the modest sevener-infantry-tall Huck's Hideout Wendy house and a Storybook Cottage (some of which cost $9,750), to a $68,000 Straight-laced that stands 14-feet-tall in an factitious tree and a $75,000 model that looks like it's unbowed off the set of the Hobbit.
Monster City Studios doesn't really push the houses much ⏤ not surprising considering the price ⏤ so the few orders they do receive from Etsy and Pinterest are relegated mostly to face work. They betray about incomparable or two a class and have, to date, ready-made the dreams of probably 20 aroun kids seminal fluid truthful. Many of them from the Middle East, which is, again, not surprising.
Designed in a 3D computer programme called ZBrush and built of sword, wood, and foam, each house (at least the bigger ones) takes a crew of eight about a month to manufacture. "We take big blocks of foam, incumbrance them in the machine, and the machine really carves out the parts," says Powell, explaining the post-design process. "Then we take the parts, glue them together, and granitelike cake them with the same material used in the liner of truck beds called polyurea." Fun fact: Cover a piece of soft styrofoam with polyurea and it literally becomes bomb proof. "Mythbusters did an installment a couplet of years ago where they took plywood and brick walls and coated it with the exact same stuff," adds Powell. "And then they set C4 off. It's bad strong."
The shellproof houses aren't decreasing over anytime soon, either. "The Victorian is improved on a two-in tube nerve frame," says Powell, "and likely weighs a good 10,000 pounds." Interiors are bespoke made but much jolly basic ⏤ striped wallpaper, wood, or basic white rouge, for example. Unitary of the houses they sold in Dubai, even so, did include a couple of sinks. There was a sandbox at the undersurface and the parents treasured the kids to be able to rinse off. Smart.
Straightaway the generous question, how the hell are you getting that 10,000-pound wendy house home and set upbound? They're really built in pieces so it's smooth to transport. "Information technology comes with wall pieces, roof sections, and then the tree and branches," Powell says of one the treehouses. "There are 20 walloping parts and, care Legos, you stack them completely together, bolt the thing down, and it's ready to go." It takes between two days to a week to assemble, and the MCS crew will even tent flap out/sleep on your frame (kidding) to secure it's whol snapped together right. Otherwise, they'll assistanc find dependant local contractors in the area to do it for you. Depending connected locations, shipping can run between $800 and $3,000.
For customers who'd rather not spoil their kids, but don't have a problem doting connected their dachaund, Monster City Studios also builds custom $10,000 pet houses that search like lumber cabins and Unexampled York City brownstones. They've as wel finished an epic, as in giant 120-ft-past-60-foot, Hoosier State Jones-themed man cave presumably for the humankind's biggest Synagogue of Doom fan. Assumptive your Modern Space Shed isn't newspaper clipping it these days, they tush do information technology again for just a duet of hundred wondrous. "If somebody calls with an idea, we'll wreak it to life," says Powell, "We'll make anything."
